The secret to changing your life
Do you want to change something in your life, in your work, in your relationships; your health, weight, happiness, job, confidence…?
Here’s the secret.
You can change your life only to the extent that you can tolerate a little discomfort.
That’s all. It really is that simple.
As soon as we start to try to change something, we feel uncomfortable because it is different. Because it is food we are not used to, exercise we haven’t done before, conversations we would rather avoid. You fill in the blank.
So we avoid it.
How will you ever change if you can’t tolerate a little discomfort? I am not talking excruciating self-torture, just the taste of a food you don’t like, or a few sore muscles from exercise you are not used to.
Think about how you avoid discomfort, and, in doing so, sabotage your attempts to change.
The avoidance of discomfort and the lack of change will probably lead to a life that is far more uncomfortable as a result.
How bad does it have to get before you start to tolerate some discomfort and start to change?
Try this:
• Pick one change and define the smallest uncomfortable step.
• Do it daily for five days. Expect it to feel awkward.
• Notice the moment you want to stop, and stay for 60 seconds longer.
Change rarely needs heroics. It needs tolerance.
If you can sit with a little discomfort, you can move almost anything.
